Mzanzi Blend

The task was to design a brand identity, logo, and digital communications strategy, with a strong emphasis on building an engaging and authentic social media presence. The challenge lay in creating a modern, relatable brand that resonates with Gen Z and Millennials while also positioning Mzansi Blend as a welcoming, community-driven coffee space.

The Brand

Mzansi Blend was created to celebrate the essence of community and the diverse spirit of South Africa. It’s more than just coffee,  it’s about people, culture, and connection. The idea is simple: without its people, South Africa is just a place. It’s the individuals, their stories, and their shared experiences that transform it into home. Mzansi Blend exists to bring those people together through coffee, a universal language that transcends borders and backgrounds.

The Brand Voice


Mzansi Blend’s voice is warm, playful, and human. It uses humour and relatability to connect authentically with its audience, especially Gen Z and Millennials, who value honesty, personality, and inclusivity. The tone is conversational and light-hearted, acknowledging imperfections while keeping the focus on quality and community. By pairing humour with a deeper sense of social responsibility, the brand balances fun with purpose, something modern audiences respect and respond to.

Signature Characters


The brand identity revolves around the concept of faces of Mzansi. A tapestry of illustrated characters represents the richness of South Africa’s communities, each one unique, each one adding to the greater whole. This design choice captures the idea that every cup of coffee is shared between stories, personalities, and cultures. The faces become a visual symbol of belonging, diversity, and individuality.

Campaign Concept

Your Coffee, Your Way

​

The campaign brings the brand’s personality to life through a simple but powerful idea: each customer gets a barista-drawn “portrait” on their cup. These drawings are often hilariously bad, but that’s the point. The humour makes it memorable, the imperfection makes it relatable, and the individuality makes it meaningful. Every cup becomes a reflection of Mzansi Blend’s message: coffee is for everyone, and everyone is part of the community.

Key Elements

Diverse Individuality
Each barista drawing (whether accurate, abstract, or absurd) highlights the uniqueness of Mzansi Blend’s customers. It’s a playful way to show that individuality is celebrated, not standardised.


Humour with Heart
By leaning into imperfection, the campaign embodies authenticity. The drawings might be laughably bad, but the coffee is always perfect. This balance of humour and quality ensures that the brand feels approachable, authentic and relevant without losing credibility.

Community Celebration
The campaign invites customers to participate directly by sharing their cup drawings online. Through hashtags like #YourCoffeeYourWay, the content becomes community-driven, showcasing the real people who make Mzansi Blend special.

End Result

The project delivers a strong, consistent digital presence for Mzansi Blend, aligning its South African identity with a playful, community-first strategy. Branded profiles were established on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, supported by a detailed content calendar with original graphics, photography, and video. Captions and hashtags were optimised to boost reach while maintaining an authentic voice.

This approach not only equips Mzansi Blend to grow its following and engagement but also positions the brand to stand out in a competitive market, laying the foundation for long-term digital success.
